A range of Wildlife Education programmes are available to schools:
The following programmes can be provided using your school facilities. NPWS will provide a power point presentation, field study equipment and review materials.
- an introduction to our native flora and fauna, the habitats they occupy and related conservation issues.
- Bog formation, flora and fauna and the conseravation issues related to the future of this habitat are covered in this programme.
- An outline of the woodland layers and their associated flora and fauna as well as the related conservation issues.
- An introduction to our resident and visiting birds
- An outline of the interelationship between farming practices and wildlife
- An introduction to the lives, value and variety of bats in Ireland
- Outlines the flora and fauna of wet land habitats and highlights realted conservation issues, assisting student to identify their role in the protection and care of these habitats.
- An introduction to turloughs as an almost unique feature of our natural Irish heritage and valuable habitat for our wildlife.
Teachers can opt to bring their students to The North Midlands Education Centre in Ballinafad Village (near Boyle), to participate in a choice of any of the following day long programmes:
- An introduction to our native wild flowers. Students are also shown how to make their own small wild flower garden.
- An outline of the woodland layers and their associated flora and fauna as well as the related conservation issues.
- Students will participate in a mini beast safari and will learn how to make a simple home/shelter for them.
- An introduction to the flora and fauna of our wetlands including ponds. Student will learn how to make their own simple wildlife pond.
- An introduction to birds and bird watching. Students will also learn how to make a simple bird feeder from recycled materials.
